Our newest designer Sebastian Gunawan has just arrived from Jakarta! Sebastian studied design at the prestigious Instituto Maragoni in Italy  before returning to his home and creating his first line. He released his first collection in 1993 and has since then established himself as reputable designer in Asia. It is easy to see his European touch within his piece.

Last week was Jakarta Fashion Week. The event saw the gowns of top designer Sebastian Gunawan. The inspiring East-meets-West silk couture is something we thought to share.

Last week, Indonesian fashion designer, Sebastian Gunawan, showcased his East inspired silk cheongsam collection “La Route de La Soie”, meaning “The Silk Road”, at Jakarta Fashion Week 2013. He and his wife, Cristina Panarese, are the head designers for the SebastianGunawan fashion house.

Established in 2006, Sebastian’s maison couture is ranked as one of Indonesia’s biggest fashion houses. With four sub-labels, sebastiangunawan, sebastianred, sebastianspose and votum, Gunawan is known for its sophisticated silk gowns and avant-garde elegance.

Danone AQUA is the dominant leader in mineral waters in Indonesia.  They did not, however, have an entry in the premium, HORECA (hotel, restaurant, catering) segment. Could their AQUA brand, while dominant in the RTD segment, be extended successfully into the premium segment? One strong competitor, EQUIL, was established in this segment as a premium, European styled product.

Sebastian Gunawan

Sebastian Gunawan is currently one of Indonesia’s biggest haute couture designers,he has been running his own fashion label in Jakarta since 1993. Sebastian discovered his passion for fashion illustration as a child, credited to his mother’s natural flair. 

His hobby in sketching led him to attending a design course in Jakarta and then honed his skills in Los Angeles. ‘A Life Portrait’ was his debut on the catwalk in 1995. His career was kicked off as a “dramatic evening and ball gown” designer. 

Sebastian Gunawan had achieved several awards since 1993 to 2007. His first award was the prestigious “International Apparel Federation World Young Designer Award 2004”, in Barcelona. He has been also constantly awarded in Indonesia, among those he achieved the “Designer Favourite Award” from Dewi Magazine.

Indonesian couturier Sebastian Gunawan presented a refined Spring/Summer 2014 collection full of elaborate embroideries and detailed with sequins that celebrate his modern muse, an everyday woman who loves to showcase her fashion choices through social media.
 
“A muse is a woman who always inspires others,” he says pointing out that some social media stars have become fashion darlings. “These bloggers, they are not movie stars but they know how to put an ensemble together and suddenly, boom around the world they have followers and they become a muse. Fashion no longer belongs to a certain class in society, it belongs to everybody,” he says.
